new experiment

Blogging isn’t really working out.  It’s too daunting having to write a whole post and having not updated for such a long time, it’s too scary a prospect to start again.  So, after reading that Carrie-Bradshaw-wannabe Julia Allison’s twitter (is that even the right noun?), I’ve decided to give twittering a whirl.  I mean, everyone does it, right?

we went to baltimore…

and no, we didn’t get shot…

the mit club baltimore/washington had a fun little gathering at camden yards to watch the red sox play the orioles. i brought kris, josh, and liz…since mit folks are scant around here. fun, but extremely hot. here’s a picture…

all the cool people go to ithaca

hello world.  i realize that i’ve been not too prolific lately, but i have some big (and rather late) news.  i have officially decided to spend the next five (maybe four?  crossing fingers) years in ithaca, new york, home of cornell university.  if you happen to get lost and find yourself in ithaca, please ring me…

speaking of which, i fell into the potomac yesterday, so my cell phone is gone gone gone.  if i have spoken to you sometime within the last few years, please email me your number (chenz at alum dot mit dot edu).   many thanks.

virgin mobile festival

while last summer’s lineup was pretty nifty, this year’s line is soo much better since trent reznor will be headlining!  lookie at this – nine inch nails, foo fighters, stone temple pilots, kanye west, jack johnson + more peeps later.  only the first two are probably worth seeing, but i soo want to see trent reznor.  yep, if you’re going to be in the dc area august 8-9, let me know…

Just a Hotel? For Some, It’s an Adventure – New York Times

abc – i hate you

no more new episodes of lost until april 24th?  what?!  i thought the whole point of not starting until the end of january was to show the whole thing at once!  this is ludicrous and i blame the stupid writers’ strike.  now there are only 13 episodes instead of 18 and there are five weeks of no lost!  bah!

on the other hand, lost is quite good this season and now josh has a chance to catch up and then watch the last five episodes with me.

oh, one more thought.  why did jin and the french woman have to die?  so random.

Interesting person…interesting ideas.  I have his book “On Intelligence” if anyone wants to read it…it’s a good read, but not worth buying…

I think neuro needs more big ideas people like this since, I think, this is what makes econ >> neuro.

I think I’m an inclusionist.  Who cares if the article is THAT relevant.  If space is cheap and at least one person (the author) finds it interesting, then why not have an article on it?

Free Lunch Isn’t Cool, So Some Students Go Hungry – New York Times

wow, i’ve never even thought about this being a problem before.  like the article suggests though, it seems like it should be an easy problem to fix.

hanson!

dear friends of the washington dc area-

my birthday is coming up soon…okay, in a couple of months…but it’s never too early to start planning. it just so happens that one of my favoritest bands of all time- HANSON!- is playing at some place in Falls Church, VA. where’s the heck is that, you ask? i’m not quite sure either, but according to their website, one can get there by taking the metro out to the boonies of the orange line and then walking for a really long time. yes, it’s a random thursday night. yes, it’s far away. yes, it’s expensive for a hanson concert ($33! wtf? i only paid $20 for the one in the fall). and yes, you probably don’t like hanson. but i do…and that’s all that counts.

time for taxes already?

have you guys missed me and the pictures of purses?  yeah, i thought so.

anywho, i hear it’s time to get started on taxes.  also, apparently one can e-file and get it direct deposited into one’s bank account.  yeah, i’m filing asap and getting my rebate!

Why It Bags Are Out – WSJ.com

Why It Bags Are Out – WSJ.com

i personally never understood why anyone would want to have the same bag as everyone else…and pay >$1000 for it.  whatevs…i’m hoping the luxury handbag bubble bursts and prices come down.  yep.

in other news, i made oatmeal chocolate chip cranberry cookies tonight.  if only the word oatmeal started with a “c” also.  and i watched the season 3 finale of lost while baking.  so i feel a little bit better now.

and lastly, kris’s hometown of saratoga springs (or something like it) was featured on throwdown! with bobby flay sunday night.  aside from seeing 200 people who look like kris (kinda astonishing), it made me want to be on throwdown because the woman who was being challenged wasn’t very good i thought.

LOST!

a few things:

(1) just watched the state of the union with some work people.  the difference between the DC “state of the union party” dorkiness and the MIT “xkcd” dorkiness made me really miss MIT.

(2) i’ve been at work so much i haven’t had any time to even think about stuff outside work and sleep, which is why it completely slipped my mind until a few hours ago that LOST is coming back this Thursday!  i haven’t even picked up the season 3 DVDs yet or watched all the mini episodes on abc.com or even had time to think about how last season ended.  it’s gonna be really sad.  there’s no one here who also watches LOST, so it’s gonna be a party of one on my couch thursday night.  oh well…at least i’ll have sawyer to keep me company…

(3) instead of the rebecca minkoff bags that i’ve been literally dreaming about, i think i’ll actually get a corinna + foley city tote instead.  they come in lots of sizes and colors like the rebecca minkoff bags and they do this cool folding over thing so it gives you choices.  and as we all know, choice is good.  here’s a picture of one i like:

stay tuned for more in the chen purse buying saga.

more rebecca

muy busy lately, but yesterday i saw a woman on the escalator at the crystal city metro with a rebecca minkoff bag.  and since not that many people have rebecca minkoff bags (and there aren’t that many kinds) and i’ve wanted one FOREVER, i just stood there and stared and felt jealous.  anywho, she had this one:

and i know i said i want the nikki, but i think i actually want this one now:

not that it matters because i can’t afford any of them…boo.

Retailers Limit Purchases of Designer Handbags – New York Times

Retailers Limit Purchases of Designer Handbags – New York Times

hmm, interesting.  i wish i were rich enough so that a $1200 bag seemed “cheap” to me because where i lived, i would actually contemplate purchasing a $1700 bag.

i subscribe to the notion that there’s a world of difference between a bag that costs several hundred dollars (coach, kate spade, kenneth cole, cole haan, michael kors, marc by marc jacobs, etc.) and one that costs less than $100, but anything that’s more than $1000 (chloe, hermes, marc jacobs, etc.) likely isn’t worth it.

currently, chen covets the nikki by rebecca minkoff (around $600?):

here’s a picture of hillary duff with the same handbag – yes, i think it would better on me too.

interesting story about shopping malls from the economist.  though, the real reason i’m putting it here is because (kris, are you paying attention?), it discusses Dawn of the Dead extensively in the context of malls.

even better than AFI…

oh my god, one of the greatest songs ever…chili peppers – suck my kiss

maybe i should start playing guitar hero…

afi on guitar hero

so last night, while my guitar hero obsessed bathrobe clad roommate was playing his game of choice in the living room, i all of the sudden hear the familiar vocals of davey havok…because apparently, miss murder is on guitar hero 3.  wow, i guess that means that AFI is finally mainstream?  though, i suppose they actually went mainstream when i started seeing them on mtv and hearing them in malls…
